A world-wide networking and business referral group called BNI is forming a new chapter in Ellicott City, Maryland. The group which meets weekly on Thursdays at Mission BBQ on Route 40 has grown steadily under the guidance of Jerry Schwartz and Anita Hicks, both long-time members of BNI and the founders of this emerging chapter.

Because the group, under BNI rules, must meet specific minimum requirements, it is not yet a recognized chapter. However, members are finding the pre-chapter status beneficial. The developing chapter will only accept one professional from each business discipline. So there would only be one tax lawyer, one accountant, and only one wedding photographer in the group. Each member must submit an application to be approved and pay an annual fee.

Another major requirement is weekly attendance. Hicks emphasized in today’s meeting that members should send representatives on those days that they are unable to attend a session.

In today’s meeting as in every weekly meet-up, every member and visitor is given an opportunity to offer a one minute presentation to introduce themselves, their business, and make a statement indicating what kind of customers make for good business referrals.

In the meeting the group also makes referrals on the spot to other businesses in the rooms. Often members share how earlier referrals worked in their favor.

Individuals spend the first 30 minutes networking and meeting visitors, chatting about business and business referrals before lunch.

The group meets at 11:30 am every Thursday, but if you want a seat at the table, you should contact one of the members of the group and request to be invited. The group is run like a finely-tuned machine. Every new member is thoroughly vetted to ensure the maximum benefit to the entire group.
