More than 100 participants in the Savage 7K foot race descended upon the town last Sunday in the fifth such event since 2012.

The race was organized by the Carroll Baldwin Memorial Institute, a non-profit volunteer board charged with operating and preserving an historic building in Savage, Maryland. Carroll Baldwin Memorial Hall’s original purpose back in the 1920’s continues to this day. It is the town’s community center, which is used for community events, but also rented to individuals and groups for special occasions.

The CBMI Board has identified structural deficiencies at the Hall that need repair. According to Hall Manager, Norma Broadwater, funds raised from the race will go towards rebuilding the deteriorating west entrance, eliminating water seepage into the lower level, and improving access for disabled persons.

Broadwater said, “Our goal with this event is to raise money for renovations, but also to provide an enjoyable community event and hopefully introduce more people to our historic community and Hall.”

A brief history of building from the CBMI website: “The Hall, a Maryland Historical Trust site, is a two-story structure built of local materials. The signature stonework of the exterior is river stone from the nearby Little Patuxent River, and was reportedly moved to the site via mule-pulled wagons.”

CBMI teamed with Bullseye Running, a company with expertise organizing foot races. Broadwater said, “We don’t have exact figures from Bullseye yet, but we raised several thousand dollars for the upcoming hall renovations.”

The 7K route led participants through the town and through Savage Park. Participants an option to enjoy a one-mile guided touir of historic Savage. After the race, breakfast breads (pumpkin, banana, apple, etc.) baked by members of the community were made available those registrants.

MyGym Columbia configured an obstacle course on Baldwin Common (the land adjoining the Hall) for children and Jailbreak Brewing Company provided happy hour prices all day for participants who showed up in this year’s long-sleeved race tee.

Winners also received a cozy, fleece cap embroidered with the Savage 7 logo. A list of the race finalists is available in the box to the left of this article.
